Superstars Review: April 26th 2012

Welcome to the first ever Superstars review! My reviews I do with a personal twist and character evaluations; please bear in mind this is also my first attempt at writing a review so please be patient! So welcome to this week’s Superstars review! On Superstars this week we saw The Usos vs Hunico and Camacho, Kelly Kelly vs Maxine and The Miz vs Alex Riley.

Match #1 – The Usos vs Hunico and Camacho

Where to start with this match….same old Superstars is all I have to say! Granted we finally saw some personality from The Usos this week but as for Hunico and Camacho it’s just silly! It’s like they don’t even care how Superstars comes off! Anyways down to the match: it was back and forth and the finale came when one tagged in another on a hot tag. Uso got a Hunico in a pin but was split up by Camacho causing the other Uso to get involved and get launched in the air by Hunico. As the ref was attending to one Uso the other rolled up Hunico for the pin, only Camacho had gotten back in the ring and kicked the Uso of the pin behind the ref’s back to cheat, therefore allowing Hunico to get the pin!  I think if given the right amount of air time and letting their personalities come through the Usos could be great!

Match rating: **

Match #2 – Kelly Kelly vs Maxine

The match started off as Kelly getting the upper hand starting off strong, and then we saw the reigns handed to Maxine to lead the match. Midway through we saw a lot of botching, it amazes me how a veteran Diva of five years in the company can still get her moves, other people’s moves and acting so wrong.  Maxine, who is only a Diva of a year or less, can do better, which leads me to my next vital point. Anyone who watches NXT will know Maxine is impressive for a rookie Diva, she has a great future ahead of her in WWE, but in this match they made her look stupid to put over Kelly Kelly. In my book this didn’t work they could put Kelly Kelly against the best e.g. Lita and she would still not look good on TV – wrestling wise anyway.  After the incredible botching scene by Kelly Kelly we see her hit her finisher on Maxine for the 1-2-3. Pretty poor match overall.

Match rating: *

Match #3 – The Miz vs Alex Riley

We started off with Miz tormenting Riley which then led into a test of strength which Miz won. We then saw some back and forth action until Alex Riley got some heat. When we started to see A-Ry getting the better of The Miz, we could clearly see in this section how much A-Ry has improved significantly! Every time we see him he’s looking more and more like a future big star! We then go into Miz repeatedly stomping on A-Ry like a child spitting out its dummy – perfect. Then we are back to back and forth action with an impressive kick to the head from A-Ry! A-Ry slid out of the ring for a breather and as Miz walked across the ring to come after him A-Ry catches him off guard from the outside to get the upper hand briefly.

Miz got straight back up and returned the favour to regain the upper hand!  Seems as though Miz has found a new method of torture: O….stretching your opponent’s hands…yeah…I don’t think that’s going to take off as a new trend! We saw some more back and forth action with Miz going up top and A-Ry slicing his arm across Miz in mid- air. Miz recovers and we see yet more back and forth action finally ending in Miz hitting his skull-crushing finale for the 1-2-3! Personally I felt this match was far too long for Superstars, however overall the match was good – these two really do work well together!

Match rating: ***

Breaking News: Divas Title match added to Sunday’s EXTREME RULES!

Just announced this evening is a Divas Title rematch this Sunday at Extreme Rules!  This week on Raw a Divas Title match took place which saw Nikki Bella take the Divas Title from Beth Phoenix. Many of us wrestling fans didn’t expect her to be given the title! If the Diva Division wasn’t bad enough now it’s just a joke. From a business point of view I understand that one twin had it so the other rightfully should be given the shot. However, I believe neither should have been given the title.  Even more so to defeat Beth Phoenix!

Either way, Nikki did win the title by an injury to Beth Phoenix. When Beth was seen jumping of the ring  she appeared to have injured her calf or ankle. Beth was seen considerably upset after the incident and sold the angle well. Most fans I’m sure would agree that it seemed legitimate and was surprised to hear it was in fact a work. One can only hope this storyline is leading somewhere good! With the twins rumoured to be leaving the company next week one would be interested to see how this plays out. My personal prediction is a Kharma return this Sunday.  Do you agree that Nikki should be the Divas Champion?  Do you agree with a Kharma return? Or just have something different to say on the matter? Then let me know in your comments below!

Welcome to our BRAND-NEW WWE column!

Welcome everyone! This is my new column on the goings on of WWE. For the past two and a half decades wrestling has gripped fans worldwide and become a larger-than-life sport. I myself have been a fan since the age of six, picked it up in the generation of Stephanie McMahon Helmsley and Triple H! The modern generation picking it up now probably won’t even remember that . We’ve had so many eras and so many outside projects from WWE that only a true wrestling fan could recall most of the big milestones.
Any fan today getting into wrestling for the first time see the likes of Randy Orton and John Cena, future legends in the making and amazing athletes. However, they don’t know the past stars, the guys that truly put down the foundation for the new generations. Guys like The Undertaker is a legend of legends; the mark he has left in the wrestling industry can never be redone or replaced. For 22 years now, and a previous six on the independent circuit, The Undertaker through many characters has entertained a whole range of people and two generations.
As for the Divas of wrestling, today people see the likes of Kelly Kelly, who sure is great from a business point of view, but she’s not going to define a generation or the Divas division like Lita did. She defined the women’s division of her era; she took high-flying risks that paid off. Today the only Diva worthy of saying she’s true to the division is Eve Torres. We saw her come from a Diva Search winner to the Executive Personal Assistant on Raw.
The modern day era of WWE has changed from the original landscape so much that it’s important that a true WWE fan watches old tapes back, researches the greats so they understand the history of the business and not just latching onto the modern format. Fans these days are losing so much of the culture of the business by getting caught up in the glamorous side of it. That is one reason why I have brought this new column to you! To write reviews on the weekly shows, monthly PPVS, the latest news, new talent, gossip and much more!

News in Briefs 15/04/12

Are you getting tired of all the dithering at the moment? I certainly am. And we all had a lot of dithering this week as the Government continued to make a massive balls-up of the fuel tanker issues. The UN also managed to continue being as pointless as ever as they are now fighting over whether to send a few people down to Syria to oversee the ceasefire. You would have thought that would have always been part of the deal, right?

Political Oops of the Week

For the Political Oops of the Week, it has to be all about the removal of tax relief on charitable donations. If there’s one thing you never do it’s attack anything to do with charity. It doesn’t matter if these measures are right or wrong because the wider population are generally idiots. They won’t listen to reason. All they will see is ‘Government Attacks Charity!’ and nothing more.

But basically these changes mean that wealthy people who donate to charity to obtain tax relief won’t be able to do it anymore. To target the issue itself, if these wealthy people are so committed to charity then why would they have an issue with these changes? Surely if they are so passionate about giving then they will continue to give anyway?

It’s not as if they don’t have the money to do this. Personally, I believe that many wealthy people who donate to charity are just doing it to avoid tax. And clearly the BBC does too because the article that outlines these changes has a link to the article ‘Most Common Tax Avoidance Schemes’ right next to it.

The Painful…

Sometimes the most painful feeling in the world is the feeling of failure. North Korea’s rocket, which outraged people all around the world, was the embodiment of failure this week as it failed spectacularly.

Originally, North Korea’s rocket was supposed to demonstrate the country’s “mastery over technology”. Well all I have to say is that it certainly didn’t manage to demonstrate any mastery over anything after that humiliation. In short, the rocket launched, it then flew in the air for a few minutes, and then it broke apart and fell into the sea.

Explosion
Over-exaggeration of North Korea's rocket launch.

As for a modern North Korea, which its leadership enjoys attempting to portray, it hasn’t quite made it yet. If the launch had succeeded then it would have made it to the 1950s where the major Cold War participants were launching objects into the atmosphere.

But since it failed it is still stuck in the 1940s because that’s when Nazi Germany was planning to create and to an extent succeeded in creating rockets that could fly higher than a plane and be used as a weapon.

Still, keep trying, you’ll do it one day.

…And the Pointless

The Grand National was run on the 14th of April 2012. I hope you managed to win some money – I certainly didn’t – but the main point here is that two horses died. One was the favourite Synchronised and the other was According to Pete. Both horses had fractured legs and had to be put down (shot).

But just like we get every year, we had animal rights groups complaining and moaning that the race should be banned. The reason why this story deserves to be put in this position is that we deal with this same trash every year. This year the leaders are the group called Animal Aid.

The Grand National is dangerous, that’s a fact you just can’t get over, however that’s part of the attraction of the Grand National. You could lower the height of the fences and the drops, like they did in 2011, but then what would be the point in even running the race anymore? Most of the millions it brings in every year are there because the race is dangerous.

Are we going to do away with a race that has been run since the 19th century because a horse or two dies every year? This is nothing but a modern obsession with banning everything that has even the slightest risk associated with it. Fabrice Muamba almost died on the football pitch, and Serie B player Piermario Morosini did die on the football pitch this week, so should we ban football because it has a risk of causing heart defects to flare up? Of course we shouldn’t.

It’s sickening that these people, most of whom only watch racing once a year, have the audacity to say that part of this sport should be banned when they really have no place in it. I’m going to take some inspiration from trainer Paul Nicholls by telling detractors to “Grow up!”

The so Outrageous that it’s Borderline Hilarious

President Obama has been on holiday this week. Instead of going to a traditional holiday hotspot he decided to partake in some relationship building with Latin America. Did this go well? As well it could possibly go considering the circumstances.

The agency that protects President Obama had a red face this week as 11 of its agents were suspended for allegedly breaking the rules and forsaking their duties. What did they do, you ask? Well first of all they broke their curfew, but that doesn’t warrant a suspension. What did, though, was them bringing women back to their hotel rooms.

Is there anything wrong with an agent letting off some steam at night, though? Of course not; it’s a stressful job, but all 11 women were supposedly prostitutes. And therein sits the problem.

Cheating
Symbolic of how eleven wives will react when they get home.

The reason they know that they were most likely prostitutes was because the hotel staff caught an agent and a woman arguing over whether he should pay her or not. Now, in my experience, that’s how you tell if someone has been caught with a prostitute.

A Positive Outlook for the Week

Normally, I would tell you how I’m looking forward to the great sports action next week, but I understand that sport is not everybody’s cup of tea (or coffee). But apart from that I’m struggling with this section because there’s not a whole lot going on at the moment.

I mean, politics is pretty boring at the moment because all that looks to be going on is the London Mayor hype. But that’s where it could be a blessing in disguise because when you look at all the interesting things that happen, they rarely come about on the crest of a wave. They usually charge out of the briny deep like an iceberg; it’s the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking so I had to have something in there.

So maybe next week won’t be so bleak and irritating after all…

News in Briefs 31/03/12

The past few weeks have been pretty barren in certain areas, which doesn’t spell good things for this News in Briefs column, but this week we had failure, humiliation, and the sweet, sweet, taste of someone else’s utter disgrace. And that means good things for this column!

Political Oops of the Week

Good lord, where do we start with this section this week? There were multiple slips this week which have served to embarrass everyone from the Government, to the Opposition, and all the way to a guy who always seems to disappear for a few years and then randomly pops up again.

UFC/BRITISH MMA: News and interviews

UFC NEWS

There is not too much to update on as the next big UFC is 145. RASHARD EVANS will challenge JON “BONES” JONES for the light heavyweight title in mid-April.
I also hear that Britain’s very own MICHAEL BISPING is in talks of a rematch with DAN HENDERSON, I really hope BISPING puts in a performance like he did recently against CHAEL SONNEN. He will need to so that his fans do not get another upset like the last time they met. BISPING was knocked out by a very strong HENDERSON. Good luck MICHAEL we all wish you well.
FRANK MIR will meet the first ever Mexican Heavy Weight Champ Cain Velasquez. MIR is getting back to his best so should be a great fight and I am sure Cain has a lot to prove too.
These two I am sure will not go the distance and I favour HENDERSON and MIR but would love to see BISPING do it for us BRIT fans.

BRIT SCENE

British MMA does not get the attention from the big TV companies like other world-class brands do, and to me this is not a good thing as the big bods of TV in the UK still see it as a demonic dangerous sport. This is far from the real truth as all MMA fans will know; it is a highly skilful sport, but the only real channels showing interest have a small budget so airtime is short. So much so I believe a lot of MMA event organisers are paying to put their shows on SKY TV’s Active channel, Channel 281 on SKY. If you check it out there are some great MMA shows, however there are no regular time slots, so check through your TV guide.
I want to introduce all my readers to a taste of what the BRIT fighters and clubs are all about. I recently went to interview some fighters and the owner of a small but impressive Academy in Strood, Kent.  COMBAT SPORTS ACADEMY.

COMBAT SPORTS ACADEMY

The Academy is owned and run by LEE JOHNSTONE. Lee also has a company called ADRENALINE and it is at these events that his fighters all get to show their worth. The Academy is located in Strood, Kent, about thirty miles from London. There is some real talent in this place and LEE JOHNSTONE is the main man who arranges everything. His company is taking a few of their fighters across to Italy in early April to an ADRENALINE event there. The costs are all funded by LEE who has dedicated his life to the Academy and the guys who train there regardless of what level they are at. If you are interested in getting into MMA and live within distance of Strood, I strongly recommend you get in touch with LEE he is a really nice fella. Please see our interview with Lee below:

LEE AMBLER is a 26 year old MMA and BJJ fighter from Gillingham Kent. He has also recently started a new style called TUFF, a mix of grappling and BJJ. His first competition was against a Brazilian guy under CLAUDIO SILVA, who had a far greater experience and under London’s top club SHOOTFIGHTERS. So many great Brit fighters have trained here and still are training there. Lee held his own for five gruelling minutes, he leg-swept his opponent twice, but due to something in the rules was not given the points. He lost by a single point and considering the time he had to prepare for the tournament and the Iranian guy called See he was up against, he did a professional job and it’s yet another skill he is mastering. I spoke to LEE before the contest. He was doing some running to warm up. He seemed ready for combat.
Lee is also our English ranked number 3 in his weight class in BJJ and has won numerous medals for his club. He fights on the ADRENALIN events; his current MMA record is three wins and one loss. I have seen him compete in all of the above and believe me this guy is a top class athlete and one of the nicest guys you could wish to meet.
Check out our interview with Lee right here:

It was a great weekend with the CSA guys and i still have more to come from them in the next column. Thank you to Lee Johnstone for allowing us to see the academy and thank you to my old friend Lee Ambler, I wish you a long career my friend.
Next time i got a few more lads from CSA and the build up to the big UFC 145.
